Origami Polyhedra
July 14, 2024
I haven’t been doing a great deal of Origami lately, for whatever reason it just hasn’t been something I’ve fancied on an evening. Fairly recently though when I was doing some casual doom-scrolling, I came across a reddit post featuring some Polyhedral Origami, and I was intrigued. Intrigued enough that I decided to spend some time making my first ever Polyhedra.
I’m definitely not an expert on the subject, but if you’ve never heard of Polyhedral Origami it’s essentially a form of Origami that seems to focus on 3D geometric shapes. It’s totally different to the models I would normally make, which have historically been animals. Also, unlike a lot of the models I tend to make, they seem to usually require modular construction with multiple components being combined together to create the final model.
So without further ado, here’s my first attempt at Origami Polyhedra:
For a first attempt I’m fairly happy. It is made from 12 sheets of Kami paper in 3 different colours. With each sheet starting at 15x15cm, the final product is a cube measuring 11cm on each side. The modules themselves were very simple to fold, and the trickiest part was figuring out how they should be connected together.
Folding this model was definitely a nice change from some of the more traditional models I folded earlier in the year, and it’s definitely encouraged me to try and bring more variety to my folding in the future.
